The Premier League round up

Manchester City kicked the weekend off in some style with a 5-0 thrashing over Crystal Palace. Silva scored first with a low shot before Kompany scored again for City after De Bruyne cut it back for him to continue his scoring flurry. More goals followed in the second half and Otamendi’s late header really added some gloss and purpose to the scoreline for City and made Palace’s day even more miserable.

Later on Saturday Leicester played Watford. Ndidi opened the scoring with his third goal since making his successful move from Genk in January and Mahrez and Albrighton added later on. The win made sure Leicester had no chance of getting relegated, an early season fear which was eradicated due to some form following Craig Shakespeare’s arrival, and they are now pushing for a top ten finish along with their opposition Watford.

Moving on, Swansea took on Everton in the Liberty stadium. Swansea were spurred on by fact that Hull had lost earlier to already relegated Sunderland 2-0 and a win would take them out of the drop zone. The first genuine chance, which ended up being successful, was when Jordan Ayew stood up a cross for Llorente who outmuscled the Everton defence and got his head on the ball to put the Swans in front. Although Everton had more chances and possesion they couldn’t find a breakthrough and when full-time sounded both teams had very different emotions.

Lastly, on Sunday Manchester United faced Arsenal at the Emirates. A three minute period in the second half where Xhaka and Welbeck scored determined the outcome of the match and also ended Manchester United’s twenty-five game unbeaten run. The result finished Mourinho’s record of not losing a game against Wenger, a record he would’ve loved to have kept against his great rival. The win has also given Arsenal a big chance of finishing above United and they could even finish in the top four if they win their last few remaining games.

Premier League previews

The first game of this action-packed Premier League weekend is Palace’s fixture with Manchester City at 12.30 on Saturday. City are expected to win, but there’s definitely a big chance that Palace could pull off a shock victory away from home, and they’ve beaten teams like Liverpool and Chelsea this season meaning that they can win against bigger teams. City could edge a step further to Champions League qualification, a competition where their fans are getting quite used to seeing them there after being in it for six years straight.

Moving on, Everton play Swansea at the Liberty later on Saturday. Swansea are aiming to keep to play a third game without losing in a row to improve their 50-50 chance of staying up. Meanwhile Everton’s attack will be looking to exploit the fact that The Swans have the worst defence in the league. However, the Welsh side need to try and make their attack the best form of defence and a big boost for them is the return of Llorente who has got twelve goals to his name this season.

Llorente has overcome a stomach bug and hopes to start on Saturday.

Another fixture is Liverpool vs Southampton. Liverpool are yet to score against Southampton this season, after playing them three times with the scores ending 0-0 and 1-0 twice. Despite the Reds’ poor record against the Saints they are on a rather good run and their past nine matches have consisted of six wins, two draws and a loss, enough to make any team be pessimistic about a game.

Lastly, Arsenal are to play Manchester United on Sunday. Arsenal are definitely in need of a win because a few of their recent performances have been disastrous and an amazing stat is that Arsenal have lost as many league games this year as they did in the whole of last year, which just shows their slump in form. Simultaneously, United are missing key men such as Ibrahimovic, Young and Rojo. Both clubs are next to each other in the league table and this should be a highly entertaining grudge match.

How does the future look for some of Sunderland’s most important men

After getting relegated, there are lots of questions being asked about Sunderland’s main men at the club and here is how the future is looking for them.

Jordan Pickford

The young goalkeeper got put into the team after Mannone got injured and has stayed there since. Playing exceptionally well and helping keep the scoreline down on a number of occasions. His good form has now alerted the attentions of a few big clubs who are sniffing around him and are making it almost certain that he will not stay at Sunderland next season.

Jermain Defoe

Defoe has scored fourteen Premier League goals this season-an impressive calibre for a thirty-four year old playing for a team at the bottom of the table. This excellent season for the Englishman has got him some attraction from Bournemouth and he may still have a few seasons left playing.

David Moyes

Moyes was appointed manager not very soon before the season started, replacing Sam Allardyce, and his stay at Sunderland has not been a very successful one. His signings have been poor and just three years ago he was appointed manager at United, now he could be jobless.

Moyes’s managerial career has gone from being very promising to a calamity.

Ellis Short

With the disaster of relegation, Sunderland owner Short could be forced to sell the club. But if he doesn’t sell then he’s going to have to provide whoever the Black Cats’ next manager is with a fair bit of cash because they definitely need to rebuild their team.

Who I think Arsenal should buy in the summer

Even if Arsenal don’t finish in the top four I’m sure their fans will agree with me that this season has been a disappointment. Shocking and sloppy performances against rivals such as Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and City have left them struggling in the league and big stars like Sanchez and Ozil could be leaving. So, here are a few players who I think whoever the manager is should buy to make next season more of a success for Arsenal.

Kyle Walker, Spurs

Although this may not be a popular target among Arsenal fans, rumours suggest that Bellerin is being eyed up by Manchester City and Barcelona, meaning that if the Gunners don’t want to play Jenkinson or Debuchy in defence, they’re going to have to get a new right-back. And Walker has said that he wants to leave after a row with Pochettino – hinting he’s open to other club’s interest.

Edinson Cavani, PSG in swap deal with Alexis Sanchez

Cavani’s time at PSG could be up and a move to the Premier League has not been ruled out. Also, Arsenal need a new striker and Sanchez has not put pen to paper with his contract and a swap deal with Cavani would help the two clubs, but not make both of them pay fees for the players.

Raphael Varane, Real Madrid

Although Koscielny is an Arsenal faithful and has served the club well they need a really good top defender to match their rivals. Step in Raphael Varane, someone who Arsenal badly need. He has shown his world-class quality at just twenty-four and must really want to nail down in stone a starting place in a team week in week out, so he would also want the move to happen.

Varane is a promising young defender.

Sergio Busquets, Barcelona

Arsenal have not had a midfielder who has been keeping the team going in midfield and dominating it this season after Xhaka has been banned too much, Ramsey is not high in confidence and Elneny has not played enough. So, I think Arsenal would love to have Busquets at the club. He is a midfielder who has been shadowed by the likes of Iniesta and Xavi at Barca and I’m sure he would like to prove he’s worth it in the Premier League.

The Premier League round up

On Saturday, Sunderland lost 1-0 after Josh King-someone who has scored fifteen times this season- scored late on. The loss for Sunderland means that they have no mathematical chance of staying up and are therefore relegated. The Black Cats have spent ten years running in the Premier League and have miraculously pulled off survival bids in previous years, when it was looking like all hope was lost. Questions now loom over the future of David Moyes and star players such as Defoe and Pickford, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing them in the Premier League again soon.

Moving on, Manchester United drew with Swansea 1-1 on the weekend. United’s penalty was very controversial after Rashford appeared to dive to Fabianski’s minimal amount of contact – which led to the referee giving a penalty and Rooney slotted it away to score in two successive games. A brilliant free kick from Sigurdsson brought Swansea the deserved equaliser. The free kick was interrupted by a strange moment when Herrera ran to the goal line only to be waved away by de Gea and the next moment Sigurdsson curled one in to the area where Herrera had just been standing. However, with all the fixtures United have played they might be getting tired and with other clubs slipping up around them they won’t consider this draw a disaster.

Another moment of magic from Sigurdsson saved Swansea once again.

Another result is Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Everton. Pedro’s long range curler opened the scoreline and put Chelsea with a dominant foothold in the game. Chelsea added another on the 79th minute after Cahill scored from a scrappy corner and a goal where Willian and Fabregas, both substitutes, combined to finish Everton off. Chelsea are still first, four points off Spurs and have to keep winning if Conte is going to win the league in his first season at the club.

Lastly, Tottenham beat Arsenal 2-0. It was a frustrating first half for Spurs where Alli couldn’t get contact on the ball to divert it into an open goal and Eriksen wasn’t able to hit the target from just outside the six yard box unmarked. However, thanks to a three minute period those missed chances didn’t matter as Alli converted Cech’s save into the net. Then, Kane perfectly placed a penalty that he won into the far corner to get Spurs a second. It was the last derby at White Hart Lane and it meant a lot to Tottenham who with the win will now finish above Arsenal for the first time since 1995.

Some Premier League Previews

On Saturday, Crystal Palace clash with Burnley at Selhurst Park. Palace’s form has shot up recently and they are now twelfth in the league, a long way from their former relegation fears. They should fancy themselves here because: Burnley are known for a poor away form, they have got an injury to Mee, a defender who has only missed forty-five minutes of Premier League action this season, and Barton is banned.

Moving on, Everton play Chelsea on Sunday. Chelsea are top by four points, and will know that if they win every game until the end of the season, they will win the league. Last time these two teams met, Everton lost 5-0 with Hazard (2), Alonso, Costa and Pedro scoring the goals and Everton will definitely be hoping to perform better this time against a fully-fit and confident Chelsea side.

Also this weekend, Middlesbrough take on Manchester City. Boro only got their first league win of 2017 this week against Sunderland, but their interim coach, Steve Agnew, believes they can stay up. Meanwhile, City are battling it out with United, Liverpool and Arsenal to finish in the top four and a win would put them in good stead. The big team news is that Gabriel Jesus may make his second appearance since coming back from injury and could lead the line alongside Sergio Aguero. Middlesbrough need a win here here to have any realistic chance of staying in the Premier League, so they will hopefully play more passionately than other times.

Jesus’ start at City was ruined by an injury, but he could start against Middlesbrough.

The last game of the weekend is the big North London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham. Arsenal are not looking good in the league right now and could finish below Tottenham, an occurence which could start a Spurs domination over Arsenal. The last fixture between these two teams was 2-2 with Sanchez equalising to rescue a draw for ten-men-Arsenal. This could be Wenger’s last derby if he leaves this summer and I’m sure he’ll want it to be successful.

Barton banned for 18 months over betting

Joey Barton, the former Manchester City, Newcastle and QPR midfielder has today been banned from playing professional football for eighteen months after he admitted an FA betting misconduct charge. He is also being fined £30,000.

Barton committed 1,260 bets in the past ten years with the average stake being £150, even though the FA has a rule that any footballer in the top eight tiers should not bet, otherwise bans will be introduced.

The Englishman said in a statement on his website that he is addicted to gambling, but also disappointed about the harshness of the sanction and will appeal it.

He also said that he is now forced into an early retirement.

The Englishman even placed bets on his own team to lose when he didn’t play which he said ‘On some occasions, my placing of the bet on my team to lose was an expression of anger and frustration at not being picked or being unable to play’. Bets that he placed when he started included in 2006 when he bet on himself to become the first goalscorer in a game against QPR, which he lost because Richard Dunne scored first. However, he denies ‘match fixing’, an offence which can bring a lifetime football ban.

Barton even placed bets about himself in matches that he played in.

Barton has always had a reputation of being football’s bad boy. He got sentenced for six months in prison after hitting a man twenty times and leaving a teenager with broken teeth; he assaulted Ousmane Dabo; got banned by Rangers after a training ground altercation; and has tweeted many abusive things about people.

Moving on, Barton has not only placed bets on football. He has placed them on many sports, and said that even when he was a boy his family allowed him to bet on things like the Grand National.

The 34-year old joined Burnley this January after his nightmare stay at Rangers, and will never play professionally again after the ban.

The FA Cup and Premier League round-up

Watford played Hull in the first Premier League round of fixtures. Oumar Niasse got sent off in the 25th minute for a high foot which Hull are now appealing against. However, in the grand scheme of the game, it didn’t matter. Markovic opened the scoreline by poking the ball in after his header struck the crossbar before Clucas scored a wonderful volley from the edge of the box – which he controlled beautifully; Gomes had no chance of saving it. The win has brought Hull a big chance of staying up and they just have to hope that they can carry on their winning form.

Clucas’ volley must be one of the best goals he’s ever scored in his career.

In the FA Cup, Chelsea beat Tottenham 4-2 at Wembley. Costa and Hazard didn’t start the game which was a surprise for Chelsea fans, but after five minutes, Conte’s change proved to be the correct decision as Hazard’s replacement, Willian, hit a free kick out of Lloris’ reach to score the first goal of the game. Tottenham reacted with Kane’s expert header; his 4th FA Cup goal of the season. Chelsea hit back with Willian’s penalty; his second goal of the day before Spurs equalised through Alli’s top corner shot which he scored from Eriksen’s exceptional through ball. You could feel the nerves around Wembley as the score was level, but Hazard’s moment of magic brought life back into the stadium. The ball was headed out of the back and fell to Hazard, who had come on as a substitute. He smashed the ball into the low corner and Spurs’ hearts fell. Matic added to scoreline with a long range top corner shot which was one of the best FA Cup goals this season and gave Spurs no hope of coming back. It was a great game and I hope for a fixture as exciting as this one in the final.

Also in the FA Cup, Arsenal played Manchester City. City started the game brightly and Cech had to tip Silva’s header over the bar. The Blues also had a legitimate goal ruled out after the linesman deemed Sane’s cross to have breached the field of play. The cross resulted in Sterling’s goal, but replays have shown that the ball stayed in play and it was the wrong decision to disallow the goal. Aguero got the first goal of the match after taking a heavy touch and then slotting it past Cech and City were on their way to victory. However, Arsenal’s Oxlade-Chamberlain fired a dangerous cross which Monreal met with a low driven shot. No goals followed in normal time, so extra-time was played. Cech’s finger-tip save kept Toure’s shot out, Fernandinho hit the crossbar and Welbeck went just wide and the atmosphere was hotting up. Arsenal had a free-kick which ended up at Sanchez’s feet, who controlled and then scored winner. Arsenal fans went mad as they secured a place in the FA Cup final.

Sanchez’s goal got Arsenal into the FA Cup semi-finals.

Lastly, Crystal Palace took on Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. Liverpool went ahead through Coutinho’s low free kick, which went over the wall and dipped into the low bottom corner leaving Hennessey with no chance. It was a true moment of magic from the talented Brazilian. Then, Cabaye’s cross fell into the path of Benteke who smashed the ball into the roof of the net and left Liverpool wondering how they let the in-form striker unguarded in the box, his favourite position to be in to gobble up chances. Then, in the 74th minute, Benteke found himself with another chance. Palace’s corner made its way untouched to the Belgium striker who once again haunted his former club, and, like the first goal, didn’t celebrate. Palace have gone up into 12th and are definitely clear of relegation now.

Some Premier League and FA Cup previews

In a 3 o’clock Saturday fixture, Hull play Watford. Hull are two points above the relegation zone and a win here would give Marco Silva’s side a good chance of staying up – and put them clear of Swansea, if they lose. Meanwhile, Watford are pushing for a top half position, right now in 10th, and Mazzari’s side will be hoping for a similar result to when these teams last faced each other – which was a Watford win. This should be a difficult game for the Hornets, who play Hull, an exceptionally good team at home.

Also on Saturday, West Ham take on Everton. West Ham are in need of three points to eradicate any fears of going down. They have slipped down to 13th after a seven game winless run recently, and hope to finish on a strong note at the end of a disappointing campaign. Simultaneously, a win with a bigger margin than one goal for Everton would bring them into 5th for the time being, but it’s very unlikely they’ll be there at the end of the season. A big bit of team news is that Andy Carroll may not start the game because of the recurrence of a niggly groin injury. The big Englishman has always been a threat in the air this season and will be sorely missed by West Ham.

Moving on, Spurs play Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday. Both teams are fighting for the title in the Premier League, and a win for either team will heavily knock the losers’ confidence and could falter their challenge at the top. Gary Cahill is a doubt for Chelsea and if he was to miss out, it would be bad news for the London club, who would then have to play Zouma, who was very poor last week. This game should be a fiery London derby.

Image result for gary cahill 2017
Chelsea are in a race against time to get Cahill fit for their clash with Tottenham.

Lastly, Arsenal clash with Manchester City in the other FA Cup semi-final. It’s a must-win game for both managers who need to win a trophy this season or they’ll come under lots of scrutiny. Arsenal have a love for this cup and have won the trophy twelve times, a joint record, and are one of the favourites as always this year. However they go into the game without the quintet of Mustafi, Welbeck, Perez, Ospina and Cazorla.

This is a big weekend for English football and one that you should definitely follow.

Who will finish in the top four?

The race for the top four is getting very exciting – and because every team’s so close, it could go down to the final day of the season. Chelsea and Tottenham have all but secured their finish in the top two positions, but there are still two more places available in the Champions League qualification positions – and four teams who all have a relatively big chance of finishing in them: Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal. So I’m going to give reasons why they’ll finish in the top four and why they might not.

Liverpool

Why they will finish in the top four: Liverpool are third, six points inside the places which bring you Champions League qualification and haven’t lost in seven games. Also their attack is lethal, even without the injured Mane, and they are the Premier League’s leading scorers.

Image result for firmino and coutinho
Firmino and Coutinho are a wonder to watch in attack.

Why they won’t finish in the top four: The defence is a big worry, and forgetting their 1-0 win last weekend they hadn’t kept a clean sheet for seven games.

Manchester City

Why they will finish in the top four: They’re in a great position in the league and they’ve got a fixture list which includes five teams who are currently not in the top nine.

Why they won’t finish in the top four: Pep Guardiola has intended to rotate Bravo and Caballero around at goalkeeper, meaning the mistake-prone Bravo will play, and he has been absolutely awful this season.

Manchester United

Why they will finish in the top four: United are a team bursting with pace and prodigies, and their victory against Chelsea showed what a good team they are.

Why they won’t finish in the top four: They still have to play Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham all away and failure to beat any of those teams will put them on the backfoot in the race to finish in the top four. They could also get distracted by the Europa League.

Arsenal

Why they will finish in the top four: Arsenal have qualified to finish in the Champions League for twenty years, and with a team consisting of stars like Ozil and Sanchez they surely couldn’t miss out.

Image result for ozil and sanchez 2017
Arsenal have attracted stars such as Ozil and Sanchez, so it would be a disappointment if they didn’t finish in the top four.

Why they won’t finish in the top four: Arsene Wenger’s future at the club has been questioned and the talk off the pitch could affect the players on the pitch, and the split in fans makes the atmosphere at games horrible.

Verdict: I think Liverpool will finish in the top four along with Manchester United because United have a great team and spirits are high after winning over Chelsea. And Liverpool because they are third in the league right now, and it doesn’t look like anyone can catch them with their advantage points-wise.
